Thank you to all who came and supported the work of ASTAL, our talented and gracious authors, and the special people who ensure quality literature makes it into the hands of young people. We truly enjoyed the day.
Each summer, ASTAL offers a five-day intensive focused on the craft of writing for young people. Through lectures, writing exercises, small group critique, and mentorship, participants delve into the essential features of writing for young readers and how to hone them in their own writing. Faculty members Kelly Easton, Mark Peter Hughes, and Peter Johnson, all acclaimed middle grade and young adult authors, work closely with participants during ‘these days [that] can change your life’.
The 2015 Institute takes place July 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17, with a special kick-off event the evening of Sunday, July 12.There will also be a follow-up session during fall 2015.Participants have the option of earning graduate credit for the Institute.
On Saturday, November 1, 2014, ASTAL will host its annual author luncheon in the Student Union Ballroom on the Rhode Island College campus. One of ASTAL’s signature events, the luncheon showcases several acclaimed authors with local ties. Attendees will not only hear each author speak, but dine at table with one of the featured authors. Authors will be available to sign their books, available for sale that day, following the event. Every attendee receives a free book and chances at countless others in a raffle.
This year’s luncheon also includes a special tribute to Liza Ketchum, acclaimed writer for young people who served as a faculty member at ASTAL’s Institute on Writing for Young People.
