ASTAL, The Alliance for the Study and Teaching of Adolescent Literature, is an organization dedicated to the promoting and disseminating of literature for children and young adults.
Founded at Rhode Island College by Dr. Jean E. Brown in 2000, ASTAL has not only raised awareness about quality adolescent literature, but increased accessibility to it for multiple populations. Students benefit from author visits, workshops, and book-giving programs. Educators benefit from author encounters and craft workshops, conferences, and materials for their classrooms. Aspiring writers benefit from dialogue with published authors, seminars on elements of craft, and intensive writing institutes. Established authors benefit from direct contact with their audience, feedback from their readers, publicity and exposure of their work.
Anyone invested in sharing the joy of reading with young people benefits from the many opportunities and events ASTAL offers.
